Description

This is a new sake cup titled "ORIBE" by Toru Ichikawa, who made a stunning debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, characteristic of Ichikawa-sensei, who gives shape to his endlessly overflowing ideas through the supreme medium of clay. This classic Oribe piece has been renewed, featuring a more refined glaze tone that reflects Ichikawa-sensei’s dedicated research. The clay body has been changed to a Shigaraki-based clay, and the pale, caramel-tinged surface accentuates the refreshing dark green of the Oribe glaze. The piece was fired with a generous amount of Oribe glaze remaining in the interior, leaving the natural flow of the glaze from the firing process intact. A Sanskrit character (Kiriku) — a hallmark of Ichikawa’s works this season — is carved into the piece in a striking, deep red glaze, giving it a powerful presence. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.7cm × Diameter 7.4cm × Height 6.3cm Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in June 2011 and established his own studio in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
