Description

This is the new "Liberalism" katakuchi (sake server) by Toru Ichikawa, who studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and made a sensational debut. It is a highly original and unconventional piece that reflects Ichikawa's signature style of giving shape to his inexhaustible flow of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. True to the title "Liberalism," the work focuses on bold expression using glazes, while still utilizing Bizen clay. It incorporates features from various series he has created to date; the piece is strikingly powerful, featuring a body split into two different designs: one side with a metallic, steel-like glaze and the other with a red glaze that creates a delicate, lizard leather-like kairagi texture characteristic of the Kagutsuchi series. This particular piece features a Sanskrit character in the center: the "Kiriiku" (hriḥ) character, representing the deities of the Dog and Boar signs of the zodiac, as well as Amitabha Buddha. Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 11.6cm × 10.7cm × Height 10.6cm Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He studied under Ryuichi Kakurezaki starting in June 2011 and became an independent artist in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
