Description
This new Ibe sake cup from the new kiln of Yuho Kaneshige is the work of an artist who, while belonging to the Kaneshige lineage, constantly questions himself, creating works not as "Kaneshige Yuho," but simply as the potter Yuho. Created using his newly designed "tsuchigama" (earth kiln)—an anagama kiln built entirely of clay without the use of refractory bricks—this piece represents a fusion of the Kaneshige firing technique with a unique kiln structure. Similar to the type of cup Master Yuho uses in his own daily life, it is characterized by a soft scarlet hue that highlights the quality of the clay, combined with a beautifully fired shiso-color. Through a firing process that maximizes the potential of the clay, the surface retains a rich, dense texture while simultaneously achieving a fine, matte finish, perfectly recreating a skin texture unique to old Bizen ware. Master Yuho, who uses this same type of cup for tea and coffee, notes that he uses the finest clay available, and that the elegant, refined surface will grow even deeper and more weathered in texture with use.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)

He began studying pottery techniques under his father in 1975. In 1980, he became independent and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama. He produces tableware, focusing primarily on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases. With tea bowls, a form he is particularly fond of, he emphasizes the interior molding (mikomi) while pursuing a perfect balance in the exterior form. He has received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Ceramics, and the Encouragement Award at the Tanko Biennale. In 2003, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award. He is also actively involved in holding solo exhibitions in various locations.
