Description

This Bizen nerikomi (kneaded clay) glass is by Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and aims to create works that suit modern life. The glass features a marble-like surface, created by mixing and firing 10 different types of clay. It is crafted by meticulously packing the clay, primarily using paddy field soil, to fill the gaps between the clay particles; its complex patterns and unprecedented hues evoke an irrepressible desire to pick it up and use it. Because the kneaded clay used is prone to having its components melt, the artist employs a method of creating a single slab for the base and gradually building up the kneaded clay from there. While this is a time-consuming process, he turns this to his advantage by applying intricate detailing to the surface, reminiscent of cut glass—a true testament to his skill. The occasional splashes of hidaski (fire-cord) bring interesting variations to the marble-like surface, resulting in a glass of a high standard in terms of appearance, texture, and usability.
