Description
This Bizen *nerikomi* (kneaded clay) glass is the work of Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and strives to create crafts that suit modern life. The glass features a marble-like texture, achieved by mixing and firing 10 different types of clay. It is meticulously crafted by beating the clay into place to fill the gaps, with field soil as the base; the complex patterns and unprecedented hues spark an immediate desire to pick it up and use it. Because the kneaded clay used is prone to melting, the artist employs a technique of creating the base as a single slab and gradually building the walls upward. Though time-consuming, he uses this to his advantage, skillfully applying detailing to the surface that resembles cut glass. The Oribe glaze accents placed here and there bring interesting variations to the marble-like surface, resulting in a glass that reaches a high standard in appearance, texture, and usability.
