Description

This pottery-body bowl is the work of Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and aims to create items that suit modern lifestyles. It is a "totai-shikki" (lacquerware with a ceramic body) piece, featuring a primitive vermilion surface that is exceptionally stylish. To emphasize the unique atmosphere of the ceramic body, despite being a rice bowl, it was painstakingly crafted using the coil-building technique, with the hand-finished texture further enhancing the primitive feel inherent in the work. The bowl is so well-crafted, and the deep red color—achievable only through lacquer—makes the vibrant green of matcha stand out so beautifully, that it would be interesting to use not only as a rice bowl but also as a matcha tea bowl.
