Description

This is an "Iga Shigaraki" sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who made a brilliant debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptionally creative work that embodies Ichikawa's signature style of giving form to his endless stream of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. Ichikawa has arranged "Shigaraki"—one of the Six Ancient Kilns, alongside Bizen—to create a visually stunning piece titled "Iga Shigaraki." By using a Shigaraki-style clay body and applying a generous coat of pale green ash glaze, he has achieved a beautiful contrast between the scarlet hues and pale greens worthy of the name Iga Shigaraki. However, rather than simply leaving the outcome to the clay and glaze, he engages them head-on with unique cutting techniques; the strata of clay created by his skillful spatula carving react with the glaze to produce fascinating variations in shading. Furthermore, the inclusion of a single Sanskrit character adds a final touch of flawlessness to the piece. Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.1cm x Height 6.3cm Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He began studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in June 2011 and established his own studio in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
