Description

This newly kiln-fired Bizen tea bowl is a work by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who is in a constant state of evolution in his handling of clay, firing, and craftsmanship. This Bizen piece, which Morimoto himself refers to as "kaburimono" (layered glaze/ash effects), features overlapping layers of sesame ash (goma) and fire-scorched patterns (sangiri) that form a profound, kiln-altered "garment." However, the true essence of this work lies not in that exterior, but in the exquisite "nuke" (clear spaces) created during the firing process; the superlative shadows that emerge within the hard-fired surface are magnificent. Rather than the soft-fired "nuke" often seen in contemporary Bizen, he has pursued the tightly fired "nuke" that truly existed in the surfaces of ancient Bizen ware, layering these effects over a rich, chocolate-like clay body to complete a three-dimensional and dense texture. Reminiscent of the famous ancient Bizen tea bowl "Tadaima," every corner of this piece is thoroughly calculated, yet this is skillfully concealed by the rustic charm inherent to Bizen, resulting in a sophisticated form devoid of any affectation. The treatment around the foot, in particular, is exquisite, making this a spectacular work achievable only through Morimoto-sensei’s passionate research.
