Description

This newly kiln-fired Bizen tea bowl is the work of Kazuki Nakamura, an artist who creates deeply evocative pieces while carrying on the tradition of master sake-ware artisans Rokuro and Shin Nakamura. Though he follows in the footsteps of these legends, Kazuki infuses his work with a unique aesthetic distinct from that of his father and grandfather. This tea bowl is modeled after his signature flat sake cup (hirahai); while it possesses a low-profile, sturdy form, the powerful undulations of its rim and foot are crafted with a hand so skilled it is easy to mistake his work for that of his grandfather, Rokuro. Despite his youth, the piece exudes the composed atmosphere and unique allure of a seasoned veteran. It is an intriguing experiment in which Kazuki has scaled up his highly acclaimed flat sake cup design for use as a tea cup. The tactile experience remains identical to the original sake cup, allowing the aroma of the tea to expand leisurely, while the unique, undulating rim gently accommodates the lips. The base features a soft brown earthen texture, and the interior is accented with a "botamochi" (rice cake) fire-mark pattern created by shielding a portion of the surface from the ash.
