Description
This is a brand-new Bizen teacup, fresh from the kiln by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with a superior aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing, and form. This Bizen-ware piece is what Morimoto himself describes as "kaburimono" (layered/covered ware), where *goma* (ash glaze) and *sangiri* (reduction-fired coloring) overlap in multiple layers to form a profound, kiln-transformed "garment." However, the true essence of this work lies not in that layering, but in the exquisite "nuke" (clear, unfired-looking highlights) that emerge during the firing process, creating superb shadows within the hard, well-fired clay body. Rather than the soft-fired "nuke" often seen in contemporary Bizen, Morimoto pursues the firm, dense "nuke" found in authentic ancient Bizen. By adding layers and these clear highlights to a rich, chocolate-colored clay body, he has achieved a three-dimensional and dense texture. Combining the aesthetic sense and technical skill honed through creating tea ceramics such as tea bowls with the deep knowledge gained from his study of tea ceremony and ancient ceramics, this teacup radiates an extraordinary allure and powerful presence. It is large and substantial, making it suitable for use as a beer mug as well.
