Description

This is a brand new Bizen ware mug, fresh from the kiln by popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a former apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. This latest piece, from the early summer 2019 kiln firing, is a magnificent mug featuring "kase-goma" (dry, crusty sesame glaze), one of Koriki-sensei's signature firing effects. Both the interior and exterior reveal a vibrant scarlet hue that becomes even more beautiful when wet, perfectly embodying the charm of Bizen ware, which is a joy to use and to "nurture" over time. This scarlet hue makes drinks taste better than ever, while the warmth transmitted through the moist surface and the subtle shifts in color offer a unique, unforgettable tactile experience unlike that of porcelain. The tree-bark-like kase-goma adds a refined, astringent quality, creating an exquisite balance between the scarlet surface and the weathered, dry texture that never ceases to captivate the eye. It is quite large for a mug, nearly the size of a beer stein, making it perfect for the coming season—simply chill it beforehand and enjoy your favorite beer. No box included
Diameter 11.3cm x 8.6cm x Height 10.9cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father’s love for pottery, he pursued a career in ceramics and, after graduating from high school, began studying pottery techniques in 1989 under master Sozan Kaneshige and his son, Yuho Kaneshige. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to strike out on his own, successfully completing his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Confectionery Container Exhibition of the North," and in 2002, he was first selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition."
