Description
This brand-new Hidasuki yunomi (tea cup), fresh from the kiln, is the work of Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who is in a constant state of evolution in his approach to clay, firing, and craftsmanship. This reduction-fired Hidasuki, which Morimoto-sensei calls "nukimono" (extracted pieces), truly lives up to its name, with colors seemingly drawn out from deep within the clay to create an intense scarlet pattern. Across a chocolate-hued, almost luscious surface, vibrant vermilion marks bloom as if the work were still filled with the heat of the kiln. Although classified as an everyday utility piece, this cup possesses the dignity and impact of a small cylindrical tea bowl, showcasing the superb sculpting ability Morimoto-sensei has honed through the study of antique ceramics and constant, thoughtful artistic output. According to Morimoto-sensei, reduction-fired Hidasuki is profoundly deep, and he notes that the clay surface will only grow more flavorful and enjoyable the more it is used.
