Description
This is a freshly kiln-fired *hidasuki* (fire-cord) tea bowl by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with a superb aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing, and craftsmanship. This reduced *hidasuki* piece, which Morimoto himself calls a "nukimono" (extracted work), truly lives up to its name by bringing out a rich, deep *hidasuki* coloration as if drawn out from within the clay. For this particular work, he used a type of clay with a pale blue-white base and abundant iron flecks; the combination with the intense *hidasuki* creates a profound, powerful landscape that seems to seethe and bubble. Reminiscent of the famous old Bizen masterpiece "Tadaima," the work is thoroughly calculated in every detail, yet this is skillfully concealed by the rustic charm inherent to Bizen ware, resulting in a refined form that is completely devoid of affectation. The treatment around the foot is particularly exquisite, showcasing a level of artistry achievable only by an artist as studious as Morimoto. According to Morimoto, reduced *hidasuki* is incredibly profound, and the clay surface will only grow more flavorful and enjoyable with extended use.
