Description

This is a black sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who has made his long-awaited debut after studying pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakizaki. This new piece was fired in the third firing of his own self-designed anagama kiln, built in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture. Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing, which gives his black works a deep luster while drawing out beautiful yet striking sesame glaze (goma). The areas with a damp-looking, crusty sesame glaze have a faint bluish tint reflecting the black base, skillfully bringing out the various hues inherent in the black clay, much like the Isezaki school. This piece was thrown thickly and then boldly cut with a spatula, resulting in a sake cup with an imposing, rock-like presence. Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for shipping)
