Description

This black tea bowl is a highly anticipated debut work by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who honed his ceramic techniques under the guidance of Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a new piece fired in the third kiln-firing of a wood-burning kiln that Oiwa designed and built himself in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture. Aiming for a powerful, high-temperature firing, Oiwa has imbued this black work with a deep luster while coaxing out beautiful yet intense "goma" (ash glaze). True to his style of finding beauty in the dramatic kiln transformation created by maintaining high temperatures for an extended period, a white kiln-change fired to the limit covers the black surface like snow. The white kiln-change is slightly tinged with blue due to the influence of the black glaze, which matches the hues of the yellow ash, enhancing both. The bold form, reminiscent of his mentor Ryuichi Kakurezaki, is also compelling, resulting in a tea bowl that is truly spectacular to behold. Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipment)
