Description

This is a Bizen sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who has made his long-awaited debut after studying pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. This new work was fired in the third firing of an anagama kiln that he designed and built himself in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture. Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing in his work, creating a dramatic landscape where layers of sesame glaze flow over one another. True to his style, which finds beauty in the intense kiln alterations produced by maintaining high temperatures for relatively long periods, the white kiln transformation achieved through firing to the limit blends with the yellow sesame glaze like snow flowing into a desert. Despite being a sake cup that fits in the palm of your hand, it presents a constantly shifting landscape, with each angle offering a different view to enjoy. (*There is a mark on the rim from where it was fused during the intense sesame glaze firing, but this does not affect its use.) Signed wooden box to follow (please allow some time for shipping)
