Description

This caramel-glazed rimmed plate is the work of Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and strives to create craft that fits contemporary life. The piece is designed for both practicality—its caramel glaze makes it resistant to staining and easy to use—and the aesthetic evolution that comes with use, thanks to the Bizen clay body. Working in the heart of Osaka, Nakahara incorporates inspiration from polyhedra and other man-made objects into his work; this piece features a stylish, minimalist design that reflects his keen sense of form. A "rimmed plate" refers to a plate with a raised edge, and the addition of incised lines here creates subtle shifts in the flow of the caramel glaze. By layering straw-ash glaze over the caramel glaze, he has created an ethereal, flame-like effect reminiscent of speckled Karatsu ware. No box included
