Description

This is a new sake cup by Toru Ichikawa, who made a brilliant debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is an exceptionally creative work that exemplifies Ichikawa's ability to give form to his ceaseless flow of ideas through the supreme medium of clay. True to its title, the "NOBUNAGA" (Sixth Heavenly Demon King) sake cup was inspired by the Sengoku warlord Oda Nobunaga, who met a tragic end before achieving his dream of unifying the country. The piece uses a feldspar glaze commonly found in Mino pottery from Gifu, a region with deep ties to Nobunaga; the madder-red finish evokes the raging flames of the Honno-ji Incident. Bold applications of gold leaf follow, echoing Nobunaga's flamboyant and magnificent image. Furthermore, this work features exposed Bizen clay—a rarity for Ichikawa—showcasing the new breadth of his artistic expression. Signed wooden box (tomobako) included
Diameter 8.1cm x 7.7cm x Height 6.0cm Toru Ichikawa was born in Tokyo. He began studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in June 2011 and established his own studio in Tamano, Okayama Prefecture, in January 2015.
