Description

This is a black sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who has made his long-awaited debut after learning the craft of pottery under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a new work fired in his third kiln firing, created in the anagama kiln he designed and built himself in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture. Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing, imparting a deep luster to his black works while drawing out beautiful yet powerful sesame glaze patterns. The areas with a wet-looking, matte sesame glaze take on a very faint bluish tint, reflecting the black base underneath; much like the Isezaki school, he skillfully draws out the various shades inherent in the black slip. This piece was thrown with a thick wall and then boldly cut with a spatula, resulting in a sake cup with a majestic presence reminiscent of Uluru. Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping)
