Description
This new square plate is by Masao Akitani, who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates works full of his own unique originality within a new spirit. This square plate features a magnificent landscape created by the traditional anagama wood-firing techniques of the Isezaki school, and while the form is simple, the beauty of the surface texture is its most compelling feature. The surface used for serving is covered in a "storm" of sesame glaze (goma), evoking the scene inside the kiln where fierce flames and sparks dance. The back also features an interesting landscape, where the contact marks from the refractory clay used to prevent sticking appear almost like spotlights due to the intensity of the fire. Points of interest also include the elaborate details such as the folded rim and the combed patterns divided into two directions.
