Description

This Bizen sake server is by Hisanaga Koide, who made his long-awaited debut after completing a lengthy apprenticeship under Juro Harada. With its exceptionally striking, bold firing and rustic form, one can truly feel the spirit of Harada’s philosophy embedded in the work. The piece features such exquisite craftsmanship in the foot rim and tea reservoir that it could almost stand on its own as a tea bowl; the addition of a spout creates a powerful, majestic silhouette with an effective touch of "asymmetry" that gives the form a profound and captivating character. The deeply fired, refined yellow sesame glaze is vivid, and the bleeding black kiln transformations and hints of green in the sesame glaze are reminiscent of his mentor, Juro Harada. The clay has a rich, viscous quality, accented by both fire cord (hidaski) and gold-toned highlights, allowing for a full appreciation of the evocative clay texture that is the greatest pleasure of Bizen ware.
