Description
This is a new sake cup titled "ORIBE" by Toru Ichikawa, who made a striking debut after studying under Ryuichi Kakurezaki. It is a highly original and exceptional piece, characteristic of Ichikawa-sensei, who gives form to his boundless ideas through clay, the ultimate medium. As the name "ORIBE" suggests, the work evokes the atmosphere of Narumi Oribe, combining vermilion clay slip with Oribe green glaze. The piece is sharply faceted, and the crepe-like wrinkles created by carving into the clay are visible through the highly transparent green glaze, while the opaque vermilion clay sections are overlaid with white glaze to create a contrast in texture. Within the interior, the glaze pools in a thick layer, creating a hue reminiscent of jade, with a beauty that draws the viewer in like a sea of jade. It features a dynamic, quite large form that approaches the scale of a small teacup.
