Description

Tosyu Yamamoto was known as a master of the potter's wheel.
He favored symmetrical, clean-lined forms.
This piece is from the latter part of his career.
"Sun" is a unique unit of length that has been used in Japan for a long time.
One sun is approximately 3 cm, so 8 sun (hassun) indicates that the dish is about 25 cm in size.
At the boundary between the area where Goma (ash glaze) is applied and the area where it is not, a phenomenon called Kinsai occurs, where the clay takes on a metallic sheen.

He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1906.
He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1987.
He passed away in 1994.
