Description
This is a Yunomi made by Sozan Kaneshige at the Maruyama kiln.
He never sold them, but made them as gifts.
I purchased the remaining Yunomi at the Maruyama kiln from his eldest son, Makoto.
It is made of a slightly coarse clay adjusted for making tableware.
The swift design of the foot (koudai) and the powerful form of the body are wonderfully executed, characteristic of his work.
It is unused.
He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1909.
He served as an assistant to his older brother, Toyo Kaneshige.
He built a kiln in Maruyama, Okayama Prefecture, in 1964.
A few years later, he perfected the Hidasuki technique using an electric kiln.
He returned to Bizen City in 1982.
He passed away in 1995.
