Description
This Tokkuri was created by Sozan between the ages of 73 and 83.
This work was produced after he moved to Gyujinshita in Imbe.
Since moving to Gyujinshita, he shifted his focus toward tea ceremony wares, producing fewer Tokkuri and Guinomi.
The artifice present in his earlier work has faded, replaced by a sense of generosity and confidence.
This Hidasuki Tokkuri was fired in an electric kiln.
His electric kiln is equipped with ducts that allow for wood firing.
The firing process lasts about one week, which is a considerable amount of time.
The wood flames create a beautiful surface texture that cannot be achieved by electricity alone.
He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1909.
He served as an assistant to his older brother, Kaneshige Toyo.
He built a kiln in Maruyama, Okayama Prefecture, in 1964.
A few years later, he perfected the Hidasuki technique using an electric kiln.
He returned to Bizen City in 1982.
He passed away in 1995.
