Description
This Tokkuri was crafted by Sozan between the ages of 73 and 83.
This piece dates from his time after moving to Gyujinshita in Imbe.
Following his move to Gyujinshita, he shifted his focus toward tea ceremony wares, producing fewer Tokkuri and Guinomi.
The artifice present in his earlier work has vanished, resulting in a style that is both generous and confident.
The greenish-tinted Goma glaze is quite understated, yet it is a piece that will surely grow on you the longer you use it.
The sharp spatula marks on the base of the Tokkuri serve as a testament to his supreme skill.
Born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1909.
He served as an assistant to his older brother, Toyo Kaneshige.
He built a kiln in Maruyama, Okayama Prefecture, in 1964.
A few years later, he perfected the Hidasuki technique using an electric kiln.
He returned to Bizen City in 1982.
He passed away in 1995.
