Description

This is a Tokkuri (sake bottle) made by Sozan Kaneshige in 1978 at Moritoshi Tokuzawa's studio in Fukuoka Prefecture.
His eldest son, Makoto Kaneshige, possessed a piece that Moritoshi Tokuzawa fired and delivered to Sozan Kaneshige.
Sozan would go on to create Karatsu-style pieces for the rest of his life, but this was the only time he produced a piece in the Chosen Karatsu style.
The iron glaze ran down to the bottom, but I believe Moritoshi Tokuzawa spent a great deal of time polishing it, as both the form and the glaze color are excellent.
The blue-white straw ash glaze flows down like weeping willows.
To achieve this beautiful pattern, the heat must be neither too high nor too low.

He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1909.
He served as an assistant to his older brother, Toyo Kaneshige.
He built a kiln in Maruyama, Okayama Prefecture, in 1964.
A few years later, he perfected the Hidasuki technique using an electric kiln.
He returned to Bizen City in 1982.
He passed away in 1995.
