Description

This is a new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Sohei Takashima, who made a spectacular debut after graduating from the studio of Jun Isezaki, winning the Japan Ceramic Society’s Modern Ceramic Art Encouragement Award.
Takashima-sensei studied under Jun Isezaki, the fifth Living National Treasure for Bizen ware, before establishing his own studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City. This work represents a bold challenge, incorporating a new firing method that utilizes a kerosene kiln alongside traditional wood-firing.

This ambitious piece succeeds in producing a rich, astringent scarlet hue by combining wood and kerosene firing, demonstrating the artist's commitment to challenging ancient traditions with modern insights, unbound by conventional concepts.

The core of the cup’s austere earthen texture lies in the finishing process within a meticulously temperature-controlled kerosene kiln; through repeated research, he has achieved a refined luster and profound depth of color.
To accentuate the weathered quality of the clay surface, each cup is crafted with a unique design, creating a fascinating impression as if each piece were the work of a different artist. This particular piece is magnificent, with a serene aesthetic reminiscent of a reduced-scale Raku tea bowl. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.2cm x Height 5.2cm Sohei Takashima was born in Kushiro, Hokkaido, in 1991.

In 2014, he graduated from the Department of Design at Dohto University and subsequently apprenticed under Jun Isezaki.

He is currently working independently in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He has received the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition Encouragement Award, the Japan Ceramic Society Modern Ceramic Art Encouragement Award, and has been selected for the Tanabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition," the Ceramic Beauty Exhibition, and the Modern Tea Ceramics Exhibition.
