Description
Yuho Kaneshige is the third son of Sozan Kaneshige.
He inherited his father’s house and kiln in Inbe.
He long produced works in the traditional Kaneshige style.
However, around 2018, he embarked on a new challenge.
He demolished the kiln inherited from his father and built a more primitive one.
This tea bowl (chawan) was fired in May 2025.
This tea bowl was crafted using clay the artist personally unearthed in the Karatsu region around the mid-Heisei era. It represents the culmination of his work with glazed pottery.
The surface embodies the true charm of Karatsu ware—rustic and powerful. The slightly sandy clay was rapidly trimmed, creating a rough texture that contrasts with the more refined feel of Bizen ware.
Though the piece features a simple ash glaze without iron painting, it possesses a quiet elegance honed through the artist’s experience in creating tea ceramics. The title, "Karatsu Clay with Ash Glaze," reflects his free-spirited approach, unconstrained by tradition.
He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1950, the third son of Sozan Kaneshige.
He began his apprenticeship under his father in 1975.
He became an independent ceramic artist in 1980.
