Description

This is an Imbe bowl by Toukoubou Yu, a studio run by two artists who studied under Yuho Kaneshige.

Within its simple style, thoroughly stripped of unnecessary decoration, subtle movements in the clay remain, allowing one to feel the quiet breath of the makers.

It is a luxurious serving bowl made from extremely high-quality Bizen clay — clay so fine that, when the studio was first established, the two artists felt it was almost too precious to use.

This piece also uses clay containing a high proportion of mountain clay. Together with the firing centered on Kase-Goma, it creates a fire pattern reminiscent of Yuho Kaneshige’s middle-period works, where the vitality of the clay can be felt within a subdued and austere atmosphere.

The strength and usability of old Bizen have been skillfully translated into a modern design, making this piece suitable for a wide range of uses, from side dishes and lightly sauced foods to desserts and fruit.

The various charms of Bizen clay mentioned above — its color, texture, and natural presence — are beautifully matched with the high technical skill of Toukoubou Yu in creating functional vessels.
