Description

This is a newly fired Bizen Yunomi by Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure and a leading figure in the world of Bizen ware whose creativity continues to flourish undiminished.

It is one of his latest works, freshly fired in February 2026.

Fired for approximately ten days in a semi-underground anagama kiln, this piece displays a richness of expression truly representative of Isezaki Bizen, featuring Goma, Hidasuki, Ito-Goma, and gradations of fire-affected and amber tones.

Rice straw was arranged diagonally across the piece in a kesa-gake style, and the Hidasuki circling the entire vessel is so captivating that one finds oneself unconsciously tracing the flow of the straw with the eyes.

As the straw burned during firing, it fused with the natural ash glaze and transformed into the effect known as Ito-Goma, while still retaining the shape of the straw itself.

Inside the vessel, Goma carried by the hot air of the anagama has settled in extremely fine particles, like a dusting of snow.

Although it is designated as a Yunomi, it can of course also be enjoyed as a beer mug.

He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1936.
He graduated from Okayama University in 1959.
He was designated a Living National Treasure in 2004.
