Description

Masao Akiya studied under Jun Isezaki, the fifth Living National Treasure for Bizen ware, and creates highly original works with a fresh and distinctive spirit. This is a newly fired Black Mug Cup by Masao Akiya.

It is one of his latest works, newly fired in February 2026.

This piece was made using the Kuro-Bizen technique inherited from his master, Jun Isezaki. The black surface is especially attractive, with a deep luster and a warm, rich tone.

A special clay collected in areas such as Osafune, near Bizen City, is applied to the surface after being blended with a small amount of cobalt. This creates a stylish and profound black texture with remarkable depth.

The surface also features spray-like Goma, a characteristic effect of anagama firing, and together with the deep, lustrous black mentioned above, it appears almost as if gold has been scattered across the piece.

Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, the design brings out the chic and modern character of black pottery through the beauty of its silhouette and lines.

This is a generously sized mug cup, and it can also be enjoyed as a beer mug.
