Description
This is a newly fired Bizen rock cup by Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure and leading figure in the world of Bizen ware whose creativity remains as vibrant as ever.
It is one of his latest works, freshly fired in February 2026.
Fired for approximately ten days in a semi-underground anagama kiln, the piece showcases the quintessential characteristics of Isezaki Bizen, featuring rich expressions of Goma, Hidasuki, Ito-Goma, and gradations of white clay tones alongside vivid hiro.
Crafted from a relatively coarse, sandy clay, the interior—shielded from the direct path of the flames—has developed a fresh and beautiful orange hue.
The rice straw used during firing was wrapped diagonally around the piece in a kesa-gake style, with the resulting Hidasuki pattern encircling the entire cup, lending it a particularly lively and engaging appearance.
Furthermore, the straw fused with the natural ash glaze carried by the flames during firing, creating subtle variations in color and texture across the surface.
He was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1936.
He graduated from Okayama University in 1959.
He was designated a Living National Treasure in 2004.
