Description

This is a Hiyama Bizen Beer Mug by Hiroshi Goseki, who trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before establishing his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture.

This beer mug was crafted using a blend of Bizen and Hiyama clay, then fired in an anagama kiln built in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City.

Perhaps due to the influence of the Hiyama clay, the piece has a distinctly rough texture when held, and its clay surface—characterized by deep caramel-brown tones—offers a charm distinct from traditional Bizen ware.

For this piece, the basic form was slab-built and then carefully refined by hand, resulting in an exceptional shape that evokes the quietness and subtle fluctuations of a Raku tea bowl.

The exterior is enriched by a deeply expressive Sangiri surface with a unique luster and stone-like texture, while the interior features a dry, crisp finish marked by the natural folds of the slab-building process, creating a powerful and weighty fire pattern.

Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.
Began an apprenticeship under Jun Isezaki in 2013.
Became an independent potter in 2017 and built his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture in 2019.
