Description

Kei Ushigaki trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before establishing his own kiln in Kagoshima, a place with ties to his grandfather. This is a Tokkuri (sake bottle) by Kei Ushigaki.

Created far from Bizen in Kagoshima, this piece reflects the appeal of Bizen ware that he came to recognize anew by viewing the tradition from an outside perspective.

It was fired using high-quality clay in an Anagama kiln he built himself in Kagoshima. Natural ash glaze, produced through intense firing, has accumulated on the surface, forming complex layers across the vessel.

The base clay has a dry, beige tone that beautifully enhances the lemon-yellow natural ash glaze covering the entire piece.

In terms of form, the work firmly carries forward the Isezaki lineage, while the clay left around the base appears to curl and lift, creating a stylish and distinctive design.

Kei Ushigaki was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1989.

After graduating from the Kyoto College of Traditional Crafts in 2013, he studied under Jun Isezaki to hone his ceramic technique.

In 2018, he established himself as an independent potter in Kagoshima Prefecture.
