Description

This is a Bizen teapot by Masao Akiya, an artist who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates highly original works infused with a modern spirit.
The teapot features the rich, nuanced aesthetic characteristic of the Isezaki school's traditional anagama wood-firing process.
It is crafted from a coarse, sandy clay, resulting in a finish that beautifully accentuates the texture of the earth.

While the overall piece exhibits a warm orange hue, it is accented by patches of bluish, crusty "kase-goma" (ash glaze), which serve as a striking highlight.

The thick-walled body features comb-mark scraping, lending it a sense of dynamic movement reminiscent of the sculptural works for which the Isezaki school is renowned. No box included (*a paulownia wood box can be made upon request) Diameter including spout: 16.3cm × 11.4cm × Height including handle: 8.5cm Masao Akiya was born in Saitama in 1968.

He studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki starting in 1998, and after ten years of training, he established his own kiln in Bizen to become an independent artist in 2008.

He held his first kiln opening in 2009.

His work has been selected for the Tanabe Museum of Art’s "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition" and the Japan Kogei Association Chugoku Branch Exhibition, and he has received awards including the Prefectural Exhibition Award and Encouragement Award at the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition.
