Description

Koji Nakahara studied under Fumio Kawabata and strives to create works that complement contemporary lifestyles. This is a newly fired Bizen Kuro Nerikomi Cup by the artist.

For this piece, Nakahara used mountain clay as the base material and formed the vessel without blending the clay completely evenly. Taking the natural nerikomi technique inherited from his teacher one step further, he developed what he calls *kuro nerikomi* (black marbled clay), producing a distinctive surface color reminiscent of rusted iron.

When clay of differing compositions is formed without being fully homogenized, cracks and other structural problems can easily occur. By repeatedly beating and compressing the clay as he builds up the form, however, Nakahara is able to create a beautifully shaped and well-balanced cup.

The complex faceted form, created with the use of a plaster mold, also works particularly well with this kuro nerikomi technique. As the vessel catches and reflects light differently from each angle, the beauty of its three-dimensional silhouette becomes even more pronounced.

In contrast to the iron-like appearance of the exterior, the marbled nerikomi pattern is much more clearly visible on the interior. Because the clay was built up in tube-like layers, the strata themselves appear almost to spiral like a tornado.
