Today's update features a Bizen tea cup by Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, a master who possessed unparalleled, god-like skills and created numerous masterpieces.
Shaped using masterful wheel techniques and fired under strictly controlled temperatures,
it is finished in a form that is both thin and supple, yet possesses a stately presence.
The rim, in particular, is astonishing, leaving one to wonder how a human could work clay to such thinness.
The 'hidaski' (fire-cord) patterns create a contrast between bold, vivid lines and faint, ephemeral ones,
giving the cup a 'wabi' aesthetic that hides a fragile beauty within the brilliance of the fire marks.
This fragility pairs perfectly with the delicate form of the cup, reflecting the unique sensibilities of Master Toshu.
The evenly carved foot and the perfectly circular body are true testaments to Master Toshu’s artisan skill.
