A cold wave hit various parts of Japan last weekend, and even in the Bizen region, we had occasional snowstorms.
Although it snowed, it did not accumulate, and we are just waiting for the arrival of spring.
Now, I would like to introduce a fascinating piece that arrived just in time for such a snowy day.
What we have received this time is a white carbonized sake vessel by Ryuichi Kakurezaki, created around 2014.
Actually, this piece features kiln-altered crimson spots in the white glaze, similar to the "gohonde" style of Ido ware or the "hotarude" (firefly) style of Hagi ware.
I have seen many white-glazed works, but I was surprised by this scenery, which I am seeing for the first time.
The thickly applied pure white glaze evokes a snowy landscape, and combined with the carbonized silver finish, it constructs a world of silver and white.
The faintly colored crimson spots against it look just like fireflies wandering through a snowstorm, which is truly fantastical.
I encountered this piece on the very day that Bizen was hit by a snowstorm, making it quite a romantic encounter.
Actually, there is another rare feature to this work: the potter's mark was missing, so Kakurezaki-sensei reportedly painted it on with lacquer.
The jet-black mark on the carbonized silver body is quite stylish, isn't it?
