Today's update features a new Bizen tea cup by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which old Bizen ware was fired.
To replicate the style of the old Bizen era, no refractory bricks or modern materials are used;
the kiln is fired in a way that defies modern common sense regarding thermal efficiency,
and because of this, it produces a supreme "tsuchi-aji" (clay character) that transcends modern aesthetics to approach that of ancient Bizen.
This piece features one side with a matte surface and the other with a viscous, glossy finish,
both of which possess a depth of character approaching the exquisite clay work of the great masters of the Showa era.
The glossy side exhibits a brownish-tan hue with a faint hint of shiso-purple,
while the matte side displays a yellow-ochre color reminiscent of Nanban-style unglazed ware.
It is also a fascinating piece in terms of texture; the smooth, gentle feel to the touch,
combined with the scattered, subtle black spots of iron blooming throughout the piece,
faithfully reproduces the weathered surface of old Bizen that has aged over hundreds of years.
The subtle "hidasuki" (fire-cord) markings also bear a hint of gold, providing a tasteful accent within the deep, rich character of the clay.
This is a masterpiece that highlights the brilliant clay work of Soga-sensei, which has even impressed the dedicated old Bizen enthusiasts living in Okayama.
