Today's update features an 8-sun Bizen plate by the late master Mitsuru Isezaki, an artisan who loved Bizen ware and made significant contributions to the region.
The plate features a "kabuto-bachi" (helmet-bowl) style design, characterized by a spacious, deep structure and a wide rim.
With a generous depth of about 3–4 cm from the base and a rim that folds back,
it has been thoughtfully crafted to easily accommodate dishes with sauce, such as simmered foods.
Despite its depth, the plate itself is lightweight and easy to store, making it a very versatile and user-friendly piece.
The "keshiki" (scenery) clearly exhibits the characteristics of Master Isezaki’s kiln, displaying a vibrant color palette even by Bizen standards.
On the base, the mark left by stacking it with another piece during firing has created a large "nuke" (clear spot),
revealing a lovely, soft scarlet hue reminiscent of a baby’s cheek.
The vibrant color of the "hidaski" (fire-cord) also pairs perfectly with the bright, refreshing brown clay.
The movement of the fire has created a gradation across the entire piece, resulting in subtle shading in the earthy brown clay.
Corresponding to this shading, the edges of the plate warp slightly, creating a delicate oval shape.
This is a magnificent plate that reflects the ingenuity of Master Isezaki, a veteran who led the Bizen pottery world.
(*There is slight wobbling due to the aforementioned warping.)
