We have received new sake vessels from Go Kaneshige, following the conclusion of his solo exhibition here in his hometown of Okayama. These pieces are gentle and reflect Go-sensei's own personality, as he continues to play with clay in his own steady way, relentlessly upholding the earth, kiln, and spirit inherited from his ancestor, Toyo Kaneshige, while pursuing the creation of "truly good things."
When one thinks of yohen (kiln-transformed) works, the quintessential Bizen pieces that come to mind are often flashy, dynamic, or striking in their intense, dazzling individuality. However, Go-sensei's works are slightly different from these "typical" yohen pieces. Perhaps it is the skill honed by three generations of using the same kiln, his careful preparation of the famous Kannon clay, or simply the reflection of his own calm temperament. Whatever it is, they possess a truly gentle "yohen" quality.
I apologize if this is overly subjective, but at this moment, this is the only way I can describe this feeling. While a dynamic and flashy "yohen" is as dazzling as the summer sun, I believe Go-sensei's "yohen" is as warm and comforting as the winter sun. Perhaps it is a generous, easygoing style of yohen that can be enjoyed without pretense. Like the fable of the North Wind and the Sun, these pieces don't try to force you to take off your coat, but rather make you want to take it off naturally. They are profound works that you can use without tension and enjoy in a naturally relaxed state.
