Today, I would like to introduce the black sake flask and black sake cup from Jun Isezaki's latest collection.
These are works created in an anagama (tunnel kiln), representing a completely different direction from his traditional climbing kiln pieces.
Among them, it is these black works that demonstrate the most originality.
The defining feature is their jewel-like surface, achieved by carefully applying slip mixed with metal oxides.
The beautiful finish is characteristic of Isezaki-sensei, who works to avoid color unevenness as much as possible.
The black color dispels the rustic heaviness typical of unglazed stoneware and makes the lines appear sharp.
The clean, dashing form pairs perfectly with the black color, which accentuates its lines.
Its dry, refined presence—free from any earthy heaviness—also fits well in modern spaces.
Perhaps it is this freshness that has led to such high acclaim for Isezaki-sensei abroad.
The title of "Living National Treasure" often brings to mind images that are stiff, old-fashioned, or heavy.
However, I believe Isezaki-sensei is a Living National Treasure with a new style that is fresher and more effortless than anyone else's.
I am very much looking forward to seeing how this fresh breeze will blow through the era of Bizen pottery.
