Hello everyone. Today’s arrival is a crane-neck sake bottle by Toyo-sensei.
Reminiscent of the famous old Bizen "Toshiwasure" (Year-End) crane-neck bottle, this is a wonderful piece with indescribably beautiful curves.
It boasts a level of perfection that befits Toyo-sensei, who studied the "Toshiwasure" so intently that he almost wore it out.
Kazuhiro Mori-sensei, who is also particularly passionate about the form of the crane-neck bottle, says, "Creating beautiful curves is overwhelmingly more difficult than making it as thin as possible."
(The crane-neck bottle he used as a comparison at the time was as thin as the stem of a spider lily.)
Expressing both strength and elegance, it would not be an exaggeration to call this piece the definitive form of a crane-neck bottle.
Furthermore, given that the firing features kiln-altered colors (yohen), it seems this was a work in which he had considerable confidence.
The scenery of that kiln alteration, with its scarlet tones and gentle ash glaze, evokes a sense of wabi-sabi.
It is currently on display in our shop, so please come and see it if you are in the area.
