Today’s arrival is a Bizen sake cup by Mitsuhiro Urakami.
It is a beautiful piece featuring the "Kuro-dasuki" (black fire-cord) firing technique, a secret passed down to a single successor within the Urakami family, set against a grey body.
There is a very pleasant contrast between its concrete-like grey hue and its smooth texture.
Furthermore, its wild, tornado-like form, draped in the aforementioned colors and textures, results in a piece that allows you to experience coldness, gentleness, and strength all at once.
Now, this may be indiscreet or perhaps something I shouldn't write, but I personally feel that in the market, "Hidasuki" (fire-cord) works are sometimes compared to high-fired pieces and seen as a lesser grade.
In fact, back when I first started working, even when I told people, "Hidasuki is wonderful," I would be told that it "doesn't look like Bizen ware," that "Hidasuki is lazy," or that it "has a cheap image."
Of course, there were those who loved Hidasuki or appreciated it equally regardless of the artist's style.
It is true that there are straw-wrapped pieces that are just lazy, low-cost efforts.
However, on the contrary, there are certainly pieces that possess a beauty that "only Hidasuki can achieve."
This sake cup is one such piece that proves why Hidasuki is good and why we should be glad it exists.
I would love for those who dislike Hidasuki, or who have not had much interest in it, to enjoy this piece as well.
