Hello everyone, how are you doing?
As I announced on Facebook last night, new works by Mashiro Aiga have arrived.
I apologize that I was unable to upload the images due to some technical issues with Facebook.
I hope to introduce these new pieces to you in several installments starting today.
Today, I would like to introduce a new Bizen tea bowl.
Mashiro Aiga is a very "man of few words."
This is a stance he never wavers from when creating his work.
Like a swordsmith silently hammering steel, he simply immerses himself in his craft.
Even when I get worried and feel like calling him,
I cannot bring myself to do so, as I would only be a distraction to his work.
Then, finally, his works arrive with a single message: "I am sending them now."
When I open the box, the path the artist has traveled through long periods of silence is clearly inscribed within.
The collection—pieces refined through rigorous selection, showing subtle changes in form through trial and error while remaining true to his core—eloquently tells the story of the artist's inner journey.
What do you hear this latest piece telling you, with its slightly softer firing in the "hima" (areas protected from direct ash) areas?
The scenery, calculated to maintain a sense of dynamism despite repeated firings, is stunning.
The soft red tint in the "hima" areas is also lovely.
The moist-looking texture further emphasizes the powerful silhouette.
By firing in stages, the artist has varied the thickness of the fine-grained "tobi-goma" (sprinkled ash glaze), giving it a three-dimensional effect.
The robust foot construction is slightly taller than the previous one, giving it a sense of upward momentum even while maintaining a low profile.
