Hello everyone, how are you doing?
Today, I would like to continue introducing new works by Takashi Baba.
I will be presenting three types of Western-style drinking vessels, which are among the most popular of Baba’s works.
Each piece features a distinct firing character, bringing out the charm of their stylish forms to the fullest.
First, let me introduce the Kuro-Bizen (black Bizen) Western-style drinking vessels.
This time, it seems it was a kiln opening that Mr. Baba was very satisfied with;
when I spoke with him over the phone, the first thing he said was, "The results were excellent."
Among them, this black Bizen-type vessel is arguably one of the pieces that benefited the most from a large amount of 'goma' (ash glaze).
On the front when displayed, it features a magnificent 'tamadare' (bead drip) effect reminiscent of a masterpiece of antique Bizen ware.

Raging flames, handprints, raindrops—everyone sees something different, but the overwhelming amount of yellow goma is truly powerful.

The black on the reverse side is also lustrous and lovely. The base is calculated not to warp even when subjected to this much heat.
Next is the Yohen-Hidasuki (kiln-transformed fire-cord) type, which is a signature firing style of Mr. Baba.
Here too, the success of the firing has allowed for both the vivid coloration of the Hidasuki and an intense ash covering to coexist.
The areas covered in ash and the Hidasuki parts are clearly delineated,
allowing one to enjoy both the comfortable mouthfeel and the intensity of the firing at the same time.

The sharply cut clay surface is well-fired, creating a luster as if it were a cut gemstone.

The boundary between the Yohen and Hidasuki sections is clearly drawn, allowing for a sharp and expressive contrast.
Lastly, this is a Hidasuki-only vessel that I saw for the first time.
While it lacks direct kiln ash effects, it is very well-fired and has developed a subtle luster.
Furthermore, the cuts on the surface make the reflection of light more complex, allowing one to feel the presence of the fire even without the goma.

This is a type of vessel I haven't seen before, and the color of wine will likely look beautiful against the white clay surface.

While many Hidasuki works leave a gentle impression, this piece feels like a fairly hard, solid Hidasuki.
