Hello everyone, how are you doing?
Today, I would like to introduce a new work by Ryuichi Kakurezaki: a three-legged Oribe sake cup.
It is a piece beloved by many as one of Mr. Kakurezaki’s signature works.
As I mentioned in my previous post,
the body and foot appear slightly twisted at the incision around the waist,
and the resulting increase in apexes adds a great sense of three-dimensional volume.
When photographing Mr. Kakurezaki’s works, one finds it difficult to pin down a "front."
This is because the frontal aspects are distributed throughout the piece, allowing every angle to be enjoyed as a front.
If you were to simply carve the surfaces, you would feel a loss of volume as it shifts from a sphere to a cube,
which would also diminish the impact of the glaze when poured on later,
but because the liveliness of the form is preserved, the glaze flowing across the surface of the vessel stands out beautifully.

No matter which side you consider the front, you can feel the movement of the clay caused by the twist.

Every angle offers the interest of a front view.

The impression of the glaze changes drastically depending on the surface.

The Oribe glaze pooled at the bottom of the cup looks like jade.
