Koichiro Isezaki's kiln opening 2 - Winter 2015 -

Hello everyone, how are you all doing?

Continuing from the previous post, today I would like to introduce some new work by Koichiro Isezaki.

In my last article, I introduced the "Ura-Koichiro" (hidden side of Koichiro), but

this time I would like to feature his "Omote-Koichiro" (public side of Koichiro), specifically his *hikidashi-guro* (pulled-black) tea bowl, which can truly be called his signature style.

He incorporates his own unique methods of forming and firing,

taking the "black" established by his father, Jun, and evolving it further by pulling the piece out during the firing process to create a dramatic transformation.

It is no exaggeration to say that this technique has made a significant impact on the long and proud history of Bizen ware.

Since Koichiro-sensei’s debut, the approach to the material of clay has broadened tremendously,

and the freedom of expression—particularly among young artists—has evolved significantly.

The surface of the *hikidashi-guro*, which I find simply beautiful, centers on a black reminiscent of wet ink,

interspersed with various colors like cobalt blue and pale green, appearing much like a raw gemstone.

While its beauty is guaranteed even in the limited light of a tea room,

I believe its stylish form would also look stunning in a modern apartment.

He even incorporates the wrinkles formed during hand-coiling as an expression of the clay itself.

The gradation from blue to black is like the glow of the cosmos.

The *goma* (ash glaze) itself has become vitrified due to the pulling technique, making it very smooth and easy to use.

The foot shows a deep, glossy black like kneaded sumi ink.
