Hello everyone, how are you doing?
Today I visited Tomoyuki Oiwa's studio and received his latest works.
His studio is built deep in the mountains, and I was surprised by the otherworldly atmosphere of the forest road on the way there.
Mr. Oiwa is currently building an anagama kiln in an open space at his forest studio,
and as I watched the construction, I felt excited thinking about what kind of pieces would be born from it.
Born in Kobe, Mr. Oiwa has always loved pottery,
and it was his desire to create something by hand that led him to study under Mr. Kakurezaki.
Currently, he creates pottery with the theme of "bringing out the expression of the clay,"
focusing on form and finish to showcase glazed pieces that emphasize the character of the soil.
The way the texture of the clay stands out precisely because of the soft glaze is lovely.
This isn't limited to Mr. Oiwa, but it's something common among all the young artists I meet:
even though their expressions and themes may differ,
they are all people who truly, deeply love pottery and ceramics.
I am convinced that works created with such passion carry that very heat within them.
There is no greater joy than for that heat to spread and for the circle of pottery lovers to grow.
It was a day that reminded me to keep delivering such passionate sentiments.
I look forward to introducing more of Mr. Oiwa's sake vessels through our website updates, so please stay tuned.
Today, I would like to introduce a variety of katakuchi (spouted bowls) that I fell in love with at first sight.

This is a blue glazed katakuchi. Through extensive research into glazes, he has succeeded in producing this subtle hue.

The faceted surfaces shift into a deep black, while the grooves transition into a mysterious pale blue-green.

This is a black glazed piece with a lacquer-like finish. It has a deep, lustrous black, reminiscent of India ink.

Even the matte black clay body shows a wonderful expression derived from the hand-crafting process.

This is an unusual white glazed katakuchi. It has a silhouette almost like a bulb.

The rim area features variations in the white glaze due to kiln transformation.
